A dental abscess is an accumulation of pus in a tooth or gum. The pain is unbearable and feels like pulsing. Consultation is urgently needed to avoid complications. The pain is accompanied by other symptoms: swelling of the mouth and face, pain radiating to the face, reddening of the gums and face, pus in the mouth, fever, foul breath and hypersensitivity of the teeth to heat and cold. If left untreated, the infection can spread and lead to serious complications such as tooth loss, infection and destruction of the jawbone, sinus infection, inflammation of the inner lining of the heart and brain abscess. A dental abscess cannot be treated without the intervention of a dental surgeon.
