The National Social Security Fund (CNSS) has taken a decisive step forward in its social protection mission. On 9 July 2025, the institution significantly expanded Universal Health Insurance (AMU) coverage to new categories of beneficiaries. This initiative aims to guarantee access to essential healthcare for a wider segment of the population, thereby strengthening the income security of insured persons and their families.
This
extension is in line with the CNSS's ongoing efforts. The AMU project, launched
in January 2024, has already proven its effectiveness. In just six months, it
has provided coverage to 800,000 people, a 50% increase over the number of
beneficiaries already covered. The organisation's long-term growth is also
noteworthy: the number of insured persons has risen from 147,294 in 2017 to
more than 303,065 in 2022, a sign of the growth of its activities and its
commitment.
Local services to facilitate access
To
ensure the success of this campaign, the CNSS has set up local services. An AMU
card production centre has been opened in Aného to facilitate access to
insurance cards. In Lomé, the Maison du Bien-Être, located in the Djidjolé
district, has been designated as a centre for enrolment and card production.
This site has seen a large influx of beneficiaries since its opening. The AMU
project is jointly managed by the CNSS and the National Health Insurance
Institute (INAM).
The
new categories of beneficiaries now include widows, widowers and orphans, as
well as additional dependants of active insured persons (non-salaried spouses,
dependent children and dependent parents). This national campaign, which began
in July, will continue until October 2025.
