The new resident representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Togo, Dr Hamadou Nouhou, presented his credentials on 31 October to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Togolese Abroad, officially marking the beginning of his mission in the country.

This accreditation, signed by Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, and Dr Mohamed Yakub Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, grants Dr Hamadou Nouhou, the mandate to represent WHO to the Togolese Government and coordinate all the Organization’s activities in the country.
In his address, Dr Hamadou Nouhou conveyed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs the greetings of the WHO Director-General and the Regional Director for Africa, who congratulated Togo on its remarkable progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably SDG 3 on health and well-being.
Dr Nouhou reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to support the implementation of the National Health Policy (NHP) and the National Health Development Plan (NHDP), aligned with the strategy for cooperation with WHO and the organization’s global work plans. He welcomed the new name of the Ministry of Health, which now includes Universal Health Coverage and Insurance, a sign of an inclusive and sustainable approach.

With a wealth of experience in the field of public health, evidenced by several positions held in various countries, the new representative will notably have to continue the efforts undertaken to strengthen the national health system. It will also be necessary to support the implementation of public health policies. Hamadou Nouhou replaces in this position Dr. Amadou Baïlo Diallo, who had been acting.

The cooperation between Togo and WHO, established for several decades, revolves around several strategic priorities: strengthening the health system to ensure equity and universal health coverage, improving health throughout the life cycle, the strengthening of health security, the fight against communicable and non-communicable diseases as well as the promotion of health.
