In Togo, over 30% of the population suffers from high blood pressure. In addition to drug treatments, certain plants can help to lower blood pressure naturally. A recent study by Boston University (USA), published in the Journal of Nutrition, confirms the hypotensive properties of hibiscus infusion, also known as Bissap.
For six weeks, researchers monitored 65 adults aged between 30 and 70, all of whom were pre-hypertensive or slightly hypertensive. The results showed that those who drank three cups of hibiscus infusion a day saw their systolic blood pressure fall by an average of 7 mmHg, and by up to 13 mmHg in the most hypertensive group, compared with just 1 mmHg in the placebo group. This effectiveness is explained by the fact that hibiscus is rich in anthocyanins, antioxidants that promote vasodilatation and have a natural diuretic effect. In other words, hibiscus helps to relax blood vessels and eliminate excess fluids, thereby relieving blood pressure.
Another
Boston University study, carried out on 65 healthy men and women aged between
30 and 70, confirmed that drinking 3 cups of bissap juice a day for at least 6
weeks reduced systolic blood pressure by more than 7%.
Recipe : Pour 1 handful of bissap into 500 ml of boiling water. Leave to infuse for about 10 minutes. Drink hot or lukewarm, preferably in the morning before 10am.
