Ramadan
is a sacred period for Muslims, characterised by fasting and spirituality.
During these long days of fasting, it is essential to maintain a balanced diet
to safeguard your health and well-being. Here are some practical tips for
eating healthily while respecting the traditions of Ramadan.
During
Ramadan, it's important to eat full, nourishing meals to recharge your
batteries and stay healthy. Here are some suggestions for the main meals of the
day:
Ftour
(breaking the fast): Opt for foods rich in fibre, protein and
complex carbohydrates such as dates, wholegrain cereals, pulses, fresh fruit
and vegetables, and lean meats.
Ichaa
(night meal): Favour light, easily digestible foods such
as soups, salads, yoghurts and fruit.
Shour
(meal before sunrise): Choose foods rich in complex
carbohydrates and fibre to provide the body with the energy it needs for the
day ahead. Wholemeal breads, dried fruit and dates are excellent options.
Eating
a balanced diet
It
is advisable to eat a balanced diet by choosing foods rich in good
nutrients.Favour the good fats found in fish, nuts (peanuts, cashew nuts) and
vegetable oils (olive, soya, peanut, sunflower).Fibre is also essential for
good digestion and avoiding blood sugar spikes. Include wholegrain cereals,
fruit, vegetables or pulses at every meal to get enough dietary fibre.Avoid
processed and sugary foods, which can upset your blood sugar levels and cause
intense hunger pangs.
Drink
enough water
Fasting
can lead to dehydration.Drink plenty of water between meals, especially after
sunset and before sunrise. Opt also for water-rich foods, such as fresh fruit
and vegetables, to maintain good hydration.Avoid excessive salt and use spices
and herbs to spice up dishes without becoming dehydrated.
Stay
active
Physical
activity is important for maintaining good health, even during Ramadan. Opt for
gentle activities suited to your physical condition, such as walking or
swimming. Regular exercise can help prevent weight gain and keep you fit
throughout the month of fasting.
