The heart can fall victim to antibiotics. « The Journal of American College of Cardiology » has just demonstrated the link between regular use of certain antibiotics and the risk of aortic and mitral regurgitation, a potentially fatal heart condition. Aortic and mitral regurgitation is a condition in which blood flows backwards to the heart. The patient feels short of breath, experiences chest pain and the risk of death is real.
According to a
study published in the journal « Gut », excess antibiotics can
also increase the risk of colon cancer. Even after a single treatment, the risk
of developing this cancer is slightly increased ten years later.
Antibiotic-induced changes to the intestinal microbiome may be to blame.
Although antibiotics are often effective in eradicating bacterial infections,
they can also alter the balance of the gut microbiome, eliminating beneficial
bacteria and allowing pathogens to thrive, explain researchers at the Johns
Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center (USA). Some of these surviving bacteria could be
carcinogenic, encouraging polyps to develop into malignant tumors.
Beware of
long term antibiotic use it may well harm the brain. According to a study
published in the journal « Plos One », prolonged antibiotic
use in women over 50 may promote the development of cognitive decline several
years later.
Inappropriate
prescription of antibiotics can cause both antibiotic resistance and serious
heart problems. It is important to inform the public and doctors about their
potentially harmful effects.
