The traditional yam festival, Tézan, is not only a festive and cultural gathering in the canton of Agou-Nyogbo Sud. This year, the Organizing Committee sought to give the event a stronger social dimension by placing the health and well-being of the population at the heart of the celebration.

Among the key activities, the Free Healthcare Day, held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Bethesda Hospital, enabled more than 150 people from the canton and neighboring localities to benefit from medical consultations, screenings (hypertension, diabetes, etc.), and essential medicines prescribed by health professionals.

We started from the observation that many families still face difficulties in accessing healthcare, whether for financial, geographical reasons, or due to a lack of awarenessTézan should not only be a time of celebration, but also an opportunity to provide concrete responses to the essential needs of our population,” explained Mawulolo Roger Lasmothey, President of the Organizing Committee.

The objectives were to strengthen the social and solidarity dimension of Tézan, provide free access to basic healthcare, raise awareness on good hygiene, nutrition and prevention practices, and mobilize local health professionals to serve their community.

Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative. For Ama, a 44-year-old housewife, “I don’t often have the opportunity to go to the hospital. Today, I was able to consult for free and receive advice to better take care of my health and that of my children.

Tonton Koffivi, a schoolteacher, emphasized that “in our profession, we often neglect our own health. This day allowed me to get a quick check-up and receive practical advice. I hope this can be repeated every year.”

In addition to medical exams, practical advice on nutrition and lifestyle was provided to encourage everyone to adopt habits that promote well-being.

Beyond its immediate impact, the initiative helps foster a culture of prevention and vigilance within the community. The Organizing Committee aims to sustain and strengthen this free healthcare program, with the support of health institutions and technical partners—and perhaps make it a biannual event, even outside the yam festival.
