The Service d'Assistance à personne à Domicile et dans les Hôpitaux de l'ONG Volontaires Internationaux pour la Santé en Afrique (SADH-VISA) organised a recreational outing for the elderly on Saturday 27 August at Lomé beach. The aim of the event was to help senior citizens to enjoy themselves, to develop their potential, to break their isolation and, above all, to reflect on their role and importance in society.

As they get older, the elderly tend to move around less outside. This can lead to frustration, isolation and illness. With a view to contributing to the health and well-being of senior citizens, SADH VISA, which is constantly committed to the development of senior citizens, has initiated a recreational outing for the elderly. It was a moment of convivial relaxation and fruitful exchanges between senior citizens.

According to Rosalie Benthywa Johnson, Director of SADH VISA, "The aim is to get our elderly people back into society, to give them a new taste for life and to ensure that they don't feel neglected.

It's about getting our elderly people to enjoy themselves and to blossom. During the meeting, they felt happy, cheered up by having learned a few things about their health. To combat loneliness and isolation and to break the isolation of the elderly, SADH-VISA is there to support them’.

Getting together with other senior citizens and sharing a good time is very good for their health. The seniors were delighted, and expressed the hope that such an event from time to time would do them a lot of good.

Rosalie Benthywa went on to call for more action to be taken at national level to promote the health of the elderly, and for this to be taken into account in all programmes and projects. "We're asking the right people or the Togolese government to come to our aid by giving us crutches, walking frames, wheelchairs and medical beds. Or financially to be able to support the necessities in their needs", she pleaded.

She also called on the entire population to show more affection for the elderly, who play a very important role in society. The culture of respect, solidarity and listening to the elderly are cardinal African values that must be maintained and promoted.
