Some women have an irresistible urge to scratch their sex day and night. A highly sensitive area of the female anatomy, the vulva can be subject to severe itching. This is known as vulvar pruritus, and is a frequent reason for consultation. Dr. Dedé Bénédicta Améwoui, Obstetrician Gynecologist, Group Medical Clinic Manager in Lomé discusses the causes and prevention of this uncomfortable condition for women.
The
vulva refers to the external female genitalia that protect the entrance to the
vagina. Itching of the vulva or vulvar pruritus is benign in most cases, but
lack of appropriate treatment can cause serious problems for women. Vulvar
pruritus can affect women of any age.
What
causes it?
Several
factors can be at the root of this itching or pruritus. « They can be
infectious, parasitic, allergic, inflammatory or oncogenic. Vulvar pruritus can
also be caused by the use of unsuitable toiletries, such as panty liners and
sanitary towels. Itching can occur after sexual intercourse, and can be
frequent during pregnancy », says Dr. Dedé Bénédicta Améwoui,
Obstetrician Gynecologist.
How
does it manifest itself?
Vulvar
pruritus can manifest itself as « burning sensations, local pain,
redness or yellow, green, foamy or thick vaginal discharge like curdled milk.
This itching is bothersome and leads to scratching of the affected area. This
can lead to lesions that can become infected », warns Dr. Dedé
Bénédicta Améwoui. An essential complication of vulvar pruritus is
superinfection of the scratched lesions.
What
to do in case of vulvar pruritus?
Vulvar
pruritus requires consultation. The specialist will suggest an appropriate
treatment. A vulvar or vaginal swab may be taken.
How
can I prevent it?
Dr.
Dedé Améwoui, Obstetrician Gynecologist, recommends that it's important to « maintain
good intimate hygiene, avoid scratching and avoid wearing underwear that's too
tight. All the mucous membranes of the vagina and vulva are very sensitive, so
it's important to take good care of them. For men, wash your hands well before
any sexual act. »
