Extract from the article: La grippe et la Covid-19 sont toutes deux causées par un virus et ont des symptômes similaires. Comment faire donc la différence quand l'on présente ces symptômes ?
The
symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu are very similar. As a result, it is difficult
to tell the difference between the flu and COVID-19. Fever, runny nose,
headache, the onset of these symptoms causes individuals to think deeply. Hence
the importance of knowing the similarities and differences between the two
infections.
Influenza
and coronavirus are both infections caused by a virus. These infections are
transmitted in the same way and cause similar symptoms.
Similarities between
influenza and COVID-19
The
virus responsible for COVID-19 has similarities with the flu virus. The World
Health Organization (WHO) states that “The COVID-19 virus and the flu virus
produce a similar clinical picture, marked by respiratory symptoms. The
symptoms vary greatly: while some people are asymptomatic, others experience
severe symptoms or even die.”
Runny
nose, fever, cough, fatigue, the initial symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to
those of influenza. The mode of transmission is also similar. Both viruses are
transmitted in the same way: through close contact, through droplets or
sneezing, or through objects or surfaces.
Point of divergence
According
to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of severe cases between
influenza and COVID-19 is not the same. “For COVID-19, the data available to
date seem to indicate that 80% of infections are mild or asymptomatic, 15% are
severe and require oxygen therapy, while 5% are critical and require
respiratory assistance. The proportion of severe and critical cases appears to
be higher than that observed for influenza.” Influenza spreads more quickly
than COVID-19 and has a shorter incubation period (1 to 3 days) than COVID-19
(sometimes up to 14 days).
It
is therefore wise to closely monitor any symptoms you may have during this
health crisis. However, if you have any doubts, consult a doctor if you
experience these symptoms.
