Stroke: beware of sleep disorders

Stroke: beware of sleep disorders

A team of researchers conducted a 14-year survey as part of the Monica (Multinational Monitoring of trends and determinants in Cardiovascular disease) research programme of the World Health Organisation (WHO). The results of the study showed that 63% of men who had suffered a stroke suffered from sleep disorders. The researchers also observed that men suffering from sleep disorders were at greater risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. Poor quality sleep should be considered as a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, like smoking, lack of exercise and poor diet. Most people need at least 7 to 8 hours' sleep a night. People who are not sleeping well should talk to their doctor. Sleep disorders are closely linked to depression and anxiety. Talking to a psychologist can also help.

Stroke is the leading cause of physical disability and the second leading cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. Thousands of victims suffer after-effects for the rest of their lives (aphasia, memory problems). However, these figures can be reduced, because doctors believe that 80% of strokes and recurrences can probably be avoided by adopting a healthier lifestyle (stopping smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, eating a balanced diet and doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity), and sleep better.
