Togo
has distinguished itself by its participation in the 78th World Health
Assembly, taking place in Geneva (Switzerland) from May 19 to 27, 2025, thanks
to the notable intervention of its Minister of Health and Public Hygiene,
Professor Tchin Darré.
Officially
representing the Togolese government, he took advantage of this global forum on
Wednesday May 21 to reaffirm Togo's commitment to universal health coverage, in
a global context marked by geopolitical tensions and growing health challenges.
In
his speech, Professor Darré highlighted the relevance of this year's theme “A
world united for health”. He called for greater solidarity, cooperation and
peace, seeing these aspects as essential to the sustainable improvement of
global health. He warned of the devastating effects of military conflicts,
ideological divides and political instability on healthcare systems. He also
called on international leaders to work together to ensure equity and access to
healthcare for all.
Togo's
Minister of Health stressed that the country's health strategy is based on an
efficient, resilient and fair healthcare system. Togo's strategy for the period
2020-2025 was presented, focusing on three main areas: improving access to
primary healthcare, strengthening human resources, notably through community
health workers, and introducing universal health coverage.
In
2024, concrete progress was made with the construction and modernization of
hundreds of health facilities across the country, and the improvement of
medico-technical equipment, with the aim of enhancing the quality of care.
Professor
Darré also expressed Togo's gratitude to the World Health Organization and its
technical and financial partners for their support in this process. He also
praised the efforts of WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in
leading international negotiations on a new legal instrument on pandemics and
the revision of the International Health Regulations.
Togo,
he insisted, remains totally committed to WHO in promoting the priorities set
out in the Fourteenth General Programme of Work, with the aim of ensuring the
health and well-being of everyone, without exception.
