The
Togolese Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has officially announced a
significant increase in seasonal flu cases in several parts of the country.
According to analyses, this is a seasonal outbreak unrelated to Covid-19.
According
to a statement released on October 8, 2025, the national disease surveillance
system has identified outbreaks of influenza. The ministry quickly reassured
the population, stating that analyses conducted by the National Influenza
Center of the National Institute of Hygiene have confirmed that this outbreak
is due to seasonal influenza viruses. No positive cases of Covid-19 were
detected, confirming that this is a typical seasonal spread of common influenza
viruses.
Understanding seasonal flu
virus
The
press release states that influenza is a highly contagious acute respiratory
infection caused by viruses. The disease spreads easily through droplets
projected when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Transmission also
occurs through direct contact, such as a handshake, or indirect contact by
touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.
Common
signs include fever, chills, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, and
sometimes a runny nose. The ministry emphasized that, in most cases, influenza
is an easily treatable disease.
Official prevention
guidelines
In
order to slow the spread of the seasonal flu virus, the Minister of Health,
Professor Tchin Darre, strongly recommends the immediate adoption of preventive
measures. These essential practices include regular hand washing with soap and
water, wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, and maintaining
physical distancing, especially if symptoms are present.
These
simple but effective actions are the first line of defense in protecting
yourself and the community from infection.
Call for rapid response and
enhanced health coordination
The
Ministry has issued a clear appeal to the population. Anyone with flu-like
symptoms is strongly encouraged to seek prompt medical attention for proper
diagnosis and treatment.
At
the same time, a strengthened coordination mechanism has been activated with
health facilities across the country to ensure effective case management and
maintain a robust health response. The Minister of Health is counting on full
compliance with these preventive measures and collective mobilization to limit
the spread of the virus.
