The CHU Campus is in the process of installing new infrastructure. This includes the opening of new inpatient wards and the upgrading of technical facilities. Modernisation work is still ongoing. The old building is currently being refurbished. Consequently, this leading hospital is entering a new phase in its operations and its role within Togo’s healthcare system. This now requires patients, carers and other visitors to adhere to a new set of guidelines.

The former inpatient wards at CHU Campus have been relocated to a new building situated to the south-west of the hospital. A modern building that reflects the CHU Campus’s new ambitions and its role in providing and ensuring access to high-quality care. It is within this framework that the hospital has announced the launch of several new services, including MRI, mammography, interventional cardiology, a multi-purpose intensive care unit and nephrology.

Modernity goes hand in hand with new routines

The modernisation of the CHU Campus will inevitably be accompanied by stricter organisation and a new hospital culture that will apply to everyone: medical staff and visitors alike. As far as visiting is concerned, the first changes are already evident. Access to inpatient wards is regulated: visitors must have a pass, the number of visitors permitted is limited, and visiting hours must be observed. A visitor who does not meet the set conditions may be refused access to the ward.

This strictness may come as a surprise in an environment where family visits are often regarded as a collective right. In most healthcare facilities in Togo, it is not uncommon to see several members of the same family gathered together at the same time in a hospital ward: loud conversations, meals, crying, crowds, and even visitors sitting on other patients’ beds. This situation can disrupt the rest, care, privacy and safety of hospitalised patients.

The new policy at the CHU Campus will therefore be straightforward: family remains important, but the hospital is not a place for family gatherings. Adherence to visiting rules will contribute to the quality of care, the prevention of infections, the peace and quiet of patients, and the safety of everyone.

At present, before visiting a loved one hospitalised at the CHU Campus, you must first check the visiting conditions. We will return to this later.
